  INTRODUCTION
  Sensing and/or controlling current flow is a fundamental requirement in many electronics systems, and the
  techniques to do so are as diverse as the applications
  themselves. This Application Note compiles solutions to
  current sensing problems and organizes the solutions by
  general application type. These circuits have been culled
  from a variety of Linear Technology documents.
  Circuits Organized by General Application
  Each chapter collects together applications that tend to
  solve a similar general problem, such as high side current sensing, or negative supply sensing. The chapters are titled
  accordingly. In this way, the reader has access to many
  possible solutions to a particular problem in one place.
  It is unlikely that any particular circuit shown will exactly
  meet the requirements for a specific design, but the suggestion of many circuit techniques and devices should
  prove useful. To avoid duplication, circuits relevant to
  multiple chapters may appear in one location.

  Introduction
  Accurate current measurement is indispensable in many
  electronic systems. The current is usually measured by
  amplifying the voltage it generates across a small value
  resistance. For systems that require a large dynamic measurement range, the sense resistance must be increased or
  the precision of the amplifier must be improved. Increasing
  the value of the sense resistor has the detrimental effect
  of increasing power dissipation. The better option is to
  improve the precision of the sense amplifier.
  Amplifier precision depends a great deal on the input
  offset voltage of the amplifier. Historically, current sense
  amplifiers on the market offered input offset voltage
  performance on the order of hundreds or even thousands
  of ОјV. With such parts, achieving a practical dynamic
  range of 8 to 10 bits can cost more than a Watt of power
  dissipation at full operating current. The LTC ®6102 ultraprecise current sense amplifier reduces input error to a
  miniscule 10ОјV. This dramatic performance enhancement
  translates directly into a greater measurement dynamic
  range—16 bits is possible even while lowering power
  dissipation in the sense resistor—thus greatly expanding …

  Introduction Why Use High Side Sense?
  In many applications, the sense load
  is ground referred. The simplest way
  to measure current in these systems is
  low side sensing, which involves adding a small sense resistor between the
  load and the system ground (FigureВ 1).
  Almost any amplifier can be used to
  amplify the sense voltage, and no level
  translation is required.
  Low side sensing, for all its simplicity, has several inherent problems.
  First, the sense resistor affects the
  return voltage on the load—where
  the return is now the sum of the
  system’s ground potential and the
  voltage across the sense resistor. The
  load now floats above system ground
  by the sense voltage, which can be
  significant—a traditional low side

  Power monitoring circuits are increasingly used throughout automotive,

  computing applications as electronics

  The problem is that power monitoring always looks like the perfect feature
