  INTRODUCTION
  Application Note 87 is the fifth in a series that excerpts
  useful circuits from Linear Technology magazine to preserve them for posterity. This application note highlights
  data conversion, interface and signal conditioning circuits
  from issue VI:1 (February 1996) through issue VIII:4
  (November 1998). Like its predecessor, AN67, this Application Note includes circuits for high speed video, interface and hot swap circuits, active RC and switched capacitor filter circuitry and a variety of data conversion and instrumentation circuits. There are also several circuits
  that cannot be so neatly categorized. So, without further
  ado, I’ll let the authors describe their circuits.

  as they originally appeared in Linear Technology magazine. This may result in some inconsistency in the usage

  Introduction
  Linear Technology’s next generation LT®1167 instrumentation amplifier uses a single resistor to set gains
  from 1 to 10,000. The single gain-set resistor eliminates
  expensive resistor arrays and improves VOS and CMRR
  performance. Careful attention to circuit design and
  layout, combined with laser trimming, greatly enhances
  the CMRR, PSRR, gain error and nonlinearity, maximizing application versatility. The CMRR is guaranteed to
  be greater than 90dB when the LT1167’s gain is set at
  1. Total input offset voltage (VOS) is less than 60ОјV at a
  gain of 10. For gains in the range of 1 to 100, gain error
  is less than 0.05%, making the gain-set resistor tolerance the dominant source of gain error. The LT1167’s
  gain nonlinearity is unsurpassed when compared to
  other monolithic solutions. It is specified at less than
  40ppm when operating at a gain of 1000 while driving
  a 2kО© load. The LT1167 is so robust that it can drive
  600Ω loads without a significant linearity penalty. These
  parametric improvements result in an overall gain error
  that remains unchanged over the entire input common
  mode range and is not degraded by supply perturbations

  The LTC В®2402, a 2-channel 24-bit, No Latency
  Delta-Sigmaв„ў ADC, is well-suited to differential
  temperature sensing using a number of different
  sensors. Extremely good matching between channels
  allows two absolute temperature measurements to
  be compared in order to determine the differential or
  gradient between two points. In the circuits shown
  below, the LTC2402, with averaging, can resolve a
  temperature differential of a few millidegrees, although
  in the case of a single-shot pair of readings, a peak error
  of 0.05В°C is possible. Independently adjustable full-scale
  (FSSET ) and zero-scale (ZSSET ) facilitate 3-or 4-wire
  measurements with platinum RTDs and the automatic
  sequencing of the two channels makes measurements
  across an isolation barrier easier. The no latency feature
  of these ADCs also resolves dilemmas associated
  with pulsed excitation. The use of pulsed excitation
  minimizes or eliminates parasitic thermocouple effects
  that can compromise RTD measurements. In addition,

  Introduction Input Protection The LT1167 is the next-generation
  instrumentation amplifier designed
  to replace the previous generation of
  monolithic instrumentation amps, as
  well as discrete, multiple op amp
  solutions. Instrumentation amplifiers differ from operational amplifiers
  in that they can amplify input signals
  that are not ground referenced. The
  output of an instrumentation amplifier is referenced to an external voltage
  that is independent of the input. Conversely, the output voltage of an op
  amp, due to the nature of its feedback, is referenced to the differential
  and common mode input voltage.
  A separate ground reference and
  the high CMRR of the LT1167 instrumentation amplifier reduce the effect
  of the input common mode voltage on
  the output signal. The closed-loop
  gain of an op amp and of most instrumentation amps is set by a resistor

  The LT1168 is a low power,
  single-resistor gain-programmable
  instrumentation amplifier that is easy
  to apply. It is a pin-compatible upgrade
  for the AD620 (and the INA118 with a
  resistor-value change) and is available in C and I grades. With negligible
  60µV (Max) offset voltage and ultrahigh 1TΩ input impedance, it can
  sense bridges with source impedances
  from 10Ω to 100k without degrading
  the signal. Its 120dB CMRR at 60Hz
  (AV = 100V) is achieved even with a 1k
  source impedance imbalance. Matching the LT1168’s CMRR using discrete
  op amps would require the use of
  0.001% resistors. The LT1168’s
  robust inputs meet IEC1000-4-2
  Level 4 ESD tests with the addition of
  two external 5k series resistors. These
  5k resistors will contribute only a
