  John Wright Lies About Long-Term Drift
  Some manufacturers are now touting phenomenal
  long-term drift specifications, based on accelerated
  high temperature testing. THIS IS A DELIBERATE
  LIE! Long-term drift cannot be extrapolated from
  accelerated high temperature testing. The only way
  long-term drift can be determined is to measure it over
  the time interval of interest. The erroneous technique
  produces numbers that are wildly optimistic and uses
  the Arrhenius Equation to derive an acceleration factor
  from elevated temperature readings. The equation is:

  K = Boltzmann’s Constant
  T2 = Test Condition in В°Kelvin

  “bogus” long-term drift is 0.156ppm/1000hr at 30°C.
  For a 2.5V reference, this corresponds to a 0.39ОјV shift
  after 1000 hours. This is pretty hard to determine (read
  impossible) if the peak-to-peak output noise is larger …

  Introduction
  In Li-Ion battery systems it is important to match the
  charge condition of each cell to maximize pack performance and longevity. Cell life improves by avoiding both
  deep discharge and overcharge, so typical systems strive
  for operation between 20% and 80% states of charge
  (SOC). Detection and correction of charge imbalances
  assures that all cells track within the desired SOC window,
  preventing premature aging of some cells that could
  compromise the entire pack capacity. Highly accurate
  measurements are required to determine SOC with Li-Ion
  cells due to their exceptionally flat discharge characteristics, particularly with the lower voltage chemistries (see
  example in Figure 1).

  Introduction
  Instrumentation, waveform generation, data acquisition, feedback
  control systems and other application
  areas are beginning to utilize 16-bit
  data converters. More specifically, 16bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs)
  have seen increasing use. New components (see the sidebar “Components
  for 16-Bit Digital-to-Analog Conversion” on page 31) have made 16-bit
  DACs a practical design alternative.
  These ICs provide 16-bit performance
  at reasonable cost compared to previous modular and hybrid technologies.
  The DC and AC specifications of the
  monolithic DACs approach or equal
  previous converters at significantly
  lower cost. DAC Settling Time

  easy to verify. Measurement techniques are well understood, albeit often

  devices must in some way interact with
  the “real” world, whether they are in
  an automobile, microwave oven or cell
  phone. To do that, electronics must be
  able to map real world measurements
  (speed, pressure, length, temperature)
  to a measurable quantity in the electronics world (voltage). Of course, to
  measure voltage, you need a standard
  to measure against. That standard is
  a voltage reference. The question for
  any system designer is not whether he
  needs a voltage reference, but rather,
  which one?
  A voltage reference is simply that—a
  circuit or circuit element that provides
  a known potential for as long as the circuit requires it. This may be minutes,

  Introduction
  The new LT1461 bandgap voltage reference is a low dropout reference that
  has superb temperature coefficient,
  tight output tolerance and low supply
  current. In addition, high output current together with unmeasurable
  thermal regulation make the LT1461
  ideal for micropower precision regulator applications. To achieve these
  characteristics, new wafer trim techniques were developed and extensive
  characterization of thermal hysteresis
  and long-term drift were performed. that can be used to turn off the reference during high output current
  conditions; it also has thermal shutdown or current-limit protection for
  the device during overload. Table 1
  summarizes the performance specifications of the new reference. How It’s Really Done
  In order for the factory to trim the
  output voltage to a very tight tolerance, four pins of the package are
  dedicated to trimming R1. This trim
  allows the LT1461 output voltage to be
  adjusted to better than 0.02%. The
  final specification, however, is a conservative 0.04%, because the part is
  measured with different factory testers …
