Introduction
The LTC В®3626 synchronous buck regulator with
current and temperature monitoring is the first of
LinearвЂ™s SWITCHER+в„ў line of monolithic regulators. It is a high efficiency, monolithic synchronous
step-down switching regulator capable of delivering
a maximum output current of 2.5A from an input
voltage ranging from 3.6V to 20V (circuit shown in
Figure 1). The LTC3626 employs a unique controlled
on-time/constant-frequency, current-mode architecture, making it ideal for low duty cycle applications
and high frequency operation, while yielding fast
response to load transients (see Figure 2). It also
features mode setting, tracking and synchronization
capabilities. The LTC3626вЂ™s 3mm Г— 4mm package
has such low thermal impedance that it can operate
without an external heat sink even while delivering
maximum power to the load. VIN

K. Bassett The LTC3626 integrates a number of easyto-use, but powerful, features that would
normally require additional ICs and design
time to implement. Specifically, with the
addition of just a couple of passive components, the LTC3626 can be configured to
provide accurate measures of its output
current, input current, and on-die temperature. It can be just as easily programmed
to limit each measured parameter.
These built-in features expand the
designerвЂ™s insight into the performance
of the system and increase the level of
control with remarkably little extra
design investment. Additionally, optional
internal loop compensation is available to minimize the design effort. 32 | January 2013 : LT Journal of Analog Innovation The LTC3626 also includes userselectable Burst Mode operation or
forced-continuous mode, resistorprogrammable switching frequencies
from 500kHz to 3MHz, power good
status output, output tracking capability, and external clock synchronization.
CURRENT MONITOR AND LIMIT One way to measure the overall performance of a system is to is to monitor the
current at the output of the power supply.
Supply current monitoring also informs
designers if downsteam ICs are operating as expectedвЂ”useful in design and
debug, and during normal operation. …
