Introduction
The LTC В®4099 high efп¬Ѓciency USB power manager and
Li-Ion/Polymer battery charger seamlessly manages
power distribution from multiple sources in portable
applications. It is differentiated from other USB power
managers by its bidirectional I2C port that allows the host
microprocessor to control and monitor all aspects of the
USB power management and battery charging processes.
In addition, a programmable interrupt generation function
alerts the host microprocessor to changes in device status
and provides unprecedented control of power management functions. This high degree of conп¬Ѓgurability allows
post-layout changes in operation, even changes in the
п¬Ѓeld, and it allows a single qualiп¬Ѓed device to be used
in a variety of products, thus reducing design time and
easing inventory management.

In addition to all of its power management functions,
the LTC4099 includes overvoltage protection, auxiliary

Life of Li-Ion Batteries
Introduction
Li-Ion batteries naturally age, with an
expected lifetime of about three years,
but that life can be cut very shortвЂ”to
under a yearвЂ”if the batteries are mishandled. It turns out that the batteries
are typically abused in applications
where intelligent conditioning would
otherwise significantly extend the
battery lifetime. The LTC4099 battery
charger and power manager contains
an I2C controlled battery conditioner
that maximizes battery operating life,
while also optimizing battery run time
and charging speed (see Figure 1). The Underlying Aging
Process in Li-Ion Batteries Modern Li-Ion batteries are constructed of a graphite battery cathode,
cobalt, manganese or iron phosphate
battery anode and an electrolyte that
transports the lithium ions.
